Pedodontics is a term derived from Latin and refers to “children’s teeth.”
Pediatric Dentistry (Pedodontics) is the branch of dentistry that focuses on the healthy development, protection, and treatment of primary (baby) and permanent teeth in children aged 0–12 years.
Primary (baby) teeth usually begin to erupt around the 6th month after birth, and all 20 primary teeth are typically completed by the age of 2.5 years.
Primary teeth differ structurally and anatomically from permanent teeth, which makes them more susceptible to tooth decay and wear.
The most important function of primary teeth is to support proper nutrition; however, they also play a key role in speech development, aesthetics, and maintaining space for the future permanent teeth.
When primary teeth are affected by decay, children may experience pain during eating, which can lead to inadequate nutrition. In addition, decayed primary teeth may lose structure and fail to maintain proper space for permanent teeth, potentially leading to crowding problems in the future.

Do Dental Implants Cause Cancer?

Primary (baby) teeth should be treated just like permanent teeth. If left untreated, they can lead to various problems such as pain, bad breath, difficulty in eating, and chewing problems.
Untreated teeth during this period may also contribute to future issues such as dental crowding and disturbances in jaw development.
When decay in baby teeth is not treated, the resulting pain and loss of tooth structure can prevent children from chewing effectively, which may lead to nutritional problems. In addition, poor dental appearance may negatively affect the child psychologically.
Another important consequence is that untreated decay may progress and cause infections that can damage the developing permanent tooth underneath.
