What Is Root Canal Treatment?
The term endodontics originates from the Greek words “endo,” meaning inside, and “odont,” meaning tooth. It is called this because it deals with the internal structures of the tooth, particularly the root canals. Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases affecting the dental pulp—the living tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels.
Root canal treatment is performed when the dental pulp becomes damaged or infected due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures, trauma, or other causes. If left untreated, this condition can lead to severe pain and eventually tooth loss. The treatment involves removing the infected or inflamed pulp, thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting the root canals, and then filling and sealing the space with a special material.
Because the procedure involves cleaning the canals inside the tooth roots, it is commonly referred to as “root canal treatment.”
Stages of Root Canal Treatment
When root canal treatment is required, patients may be advised to follow certain instructions. In order to ensure the success of the treatment, the recommended steps include:

Dental X-ray
When damage or decay occurs in a tooth for any reason, the patient consults a dentist. If the dentist determines that endodontic treatment is necessary, the patient is asked to have a dental X-ray taken. The X-ray is required to accurately identify the exact location and extent of the tooth decay.
Anesthesia
In order to perform the necessary filling procedure on the tooth, local anesthesia is first applied to numb the affected area. Although it is commonly believed that root canal treatment is more painful than a filling procedure, in reality, the opposite is true.
Pulpectomy
After anesthesia is administered, an access cavity is opened in the tooth and the infected pulp is removed. The duration of this procedure may vary depending on the condition of the tooth. However, since local anesthesia is used, the patient does not feel any pain during the treatment.
Filling Procedure
After the dental pulp is removed, a space remains inside the tooth. This space is filled with a material called gutta-percha and then sealed with a dental cement known as sealer. The entire procedure usually takes around one hour, depending on the extent of the damage and the condition of the pulp.
Conditions that require root canal treatment are typically caused by issues such as cracked teeth, deep decay, or trauma to the tooth. In cases where the tooth can be preserved, prosthetic replacement is not necessary. Since preserving the natural tooth is always preferred, it is better to restore it with filling materials rather than extracting it. Dental specialists always aim to keep the natural tooth whenever possible and avoid extraction unless absolutely necessary.

Another important consequence is that untreated decay may progress and cause infections that can damage the developing permanent tooth underneath.
If decay progresses to the point where tooth extraction is required, space maintainers may need to be used to preserve the space for the permanent tooth. However, treating the baby tooth itself is both a simpler and healthier solution.
